How can I make my short straight shaved hair to be flat or curly?

My husband has the most straight and poked up hair in the world. what he likes to do is let it grow out just about 1 inch. He then buys hair nets from the corner liquor store at 3 for a dollar. He applies gel to his hair and then the hair net, just make sure you pull the net back to however much you want your hair to stay down. let the gel dry and then remove the hair net. this is such a good look which drives me crazy. ; ) hope this helps!!
